You Need A Firewall On Your Computer

As the prevalence of computer hackers, scammers and viruses increase around the Internet, you should know how and why to install a firewall. It is a firewall that is responsible for defending your computer from any malicious data that may attempt to enter it. Dangerous attacks to your computer can negatively impact upon you but these can be avoided.

You first need to determine what kind of firewall you need for your computer as there are many available including some from major corporations such as Microsoft. A computer that came installed with the Microsoft XP or Vista operating system is likely to have a firewall already set up and ready to use. However, it may not be turned on or working properly. If you have one of the earlier operating systems, you will need to purchase your own software. Owners of Microsoft XP may still want to purchase separate firewall software as the XP version doesn't get great reviews.

The many products available, include Norton, AVG, and McAfee and can be puchased in store or downloaded from the internet. The price of software varies depending on how sophisticated it is but there are also plenty of low cost versions available, even from the big name companies. Prior to the installation of your firewall, a few things must be taken into consideration. The functions that you need, such as file and printing sharing, must not be blocked by the program. The documentation provided allows the settings to be configured during installation or at a later date.

Firewalls tend to stop you from going to certain parts of the Internet as well. This can happen if you use a local area network or a router, so it is important that you are familiar with how you connect. Secured networks are particularly difficult to access when you have a firewall installed. A pc linked to a company network may require a specific settings configuration to allow you to connect a firewall to them and the company's IT department should be able to advise you with this.
